Where did I park again?

(Amended June 29th)

I guess that is appropriate that I had this post lined up about 2 months ago with a date so far in the future I thought I would get around to it eventually and instead it autoposts before I write anything.  My apologies to anyone that submitted and/or has been following, but there were a few bumps in the road that have distracted me from being diligent about the project.  The last 12 states or so have been difficult to get as I have sent out cameras and then gotten no responses.  Also, have been working a family photo archival project that has been time intensive.

Pennsylvania: Virtue, Liberty, and Independence

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

These photos were submitted by K. Martin of Pennsylvania.  Like that the MJ in question here in the first picture could either be Michael Jordan or Michael Jackson.

Both of these pictures are good examples of paying attention to architectural details.

The first picture has a nice Colonial feel to it and other than the flag, seems like it could be 200 years ago.  The second picture I like for the neon sign at Reading Terminal Market.

I like this photo for the candid moment.  Spontaneous and light-hearted.

In the first picture, a lot of people take a picture of the steps in front of the Philadelphia Museum of Art since Rocky ran up those stairs.  What makes this picture better (to me anyways) is the bike in the foreground drawing you up the stairs.  I like the expression on the guy posing with the Rocky statue in the second picture.

This picture is interesting to me for the effect the solar flare caused and I was intrigued by the purple/pink fountain.  Was it caused by the sunlight or was something else going on?  The second picture just looks like a tranquil day in Rittenhouse Sq. (I think that is the location.  Please correct me if I’m wrong.

Nashville

No, I haven’t given up on the project.  Sorry for the long delay between posts.  Some personal things came up in my life and I got kind of sidetracked.

These pictures come from K. Leniski  from Tennessee.  In the first picture, what really drew my attention were the different posters and strong identity Nashville has with music (and not just country).  The second picture is good for its use of perspective and makes you feel like are at the playground.

The boots just scream country to me and grounds the picture in a location.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH Not sure what drew me to these two pictures of very different kinds of statues, but I just like them for some reason.

Good light on this picture and looks like she is having a blast with the leaves.
On a side note, hopefully you can visit redcross.org and donate.  The flooding in Nashville has been extremely severe and help you can give would be great.

North Carolina: A Better Place to Be

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

These photos come from J. & A. Loewensteiner from North Carolina.   In this first picture, I guess they don’t sell much granola.

Usually you don’t want to visualize a chicken coop when thinking about eating.  Chicken coops can get pretty nasty.  But by the looks of how old that sign is, I guess it works for them.  Also brings to mind how fresh the chickens are.

Any eating establishment frequented by police officers is usually good.  Why?  They have to eat on the job and don’t usually have the ability to bring their own lunch (no fridge or microwave makes that harder).  So they get try a lot of different places on their patrols and I’m sure they go to where they like best.  So as a nice travel rule, ask the cops for some place good to eat.

The Show Me State

These photos are from. S. Sontheimer DeVaughan from Missouri.  There is a saying (though I don’t know who said it) that eyes are the windows to the soul.  If that is the case, then photography is like looking into that window (and why some cultures viewed photographs as stealing a part of your soul).  Looking at this set of photos, I see a sunny disposition (and not just in the actual lighting, but the morning setting helps).

What I like here is the sense of community that is shared at a farmer’s market.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

I liked the contrast of the red jacket the most in this picture.

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

The longer shadows tell me it had to be kind of early for this picture to be taken and it usually necessary to be early to get the best items at a farmers market.  The next three photos give a nice snapshot of what appears to be a nice neighborhood with restaurants and cafes to hang out.  Makes you want to move in next door.

Georgia on My Mind

Autosave-File vom d-lab2/3 der AgfaPhoto GmbH

Photos submitted by Tiffany Rossell of Georgia.  Not the typical photos people expect (or least I expect) when one thinks of Georgia.  No peaches or plantations and certainly nothing that resembles Gone with the Wind.  These pictures look more like New Georgia; a state that is similar to a lot of other places.  Costco (or other warehouse stores) dominate the landscape.

I like the single car in the parking lot in the distance.  Commentary on the isolation of suburbia?  Perhaps.

I like the early morning sun here being filtered by the fog.  The condensation on the car windows gives the photo a tactile feeling.

Iowa: “Ambivalent Appreciation”

After getting some feedback that people would prefer I add more commentary on why I picked certain photos, I thought I would start doing so on the easiest submission, Iowa.  L. Petersen  took these photos from Emmetsburg, Iowa on Oct. 16, 2009 from 9-10am.  Ms. Petersen also submitted a description of each photo so I will include them after each photo in italics.

Maple – Fall Beauty at Harrison Park

I like the sense of solitude you get from this view of the park.  Also by framing the shot tighter, Ms. Petersen was able to eliminate the overcast sky, which she noted the park would be “better in sunlight but leaves may be soon gone”

Interest at Crossroads” – Wildlife/Agriculture/Commercial Land For Sale

I like the convergence in this photo of the three different subjects that aren’t obvious.

I think Casey did a great here showing why NJ is called the Garden State.
